What is an ADU?

An accessory Dwelling Unit is a secondary housing unit on any single-unit residence. These are additional spaces attached to a house and turned into functional dwellings for living and other purposes. Different ADUs include basement conversion ADU, detached new construction ADU, addition ADU, ADU above garages, and garage conversion ADU.

Other names for the accessory dwelling unit are in-law unit, mother-in-law unit, in-law apartment, secondary dwelling unit, granny flat, granny pod, bonus unit, casita, carriage Unit or carriage house or ohana unit (Hawaii). An ADU has a separate entrance, a kitchen and a living area. However, it is attached to the water and energy connection of the primary house.
